MSO McLaren P1 GTR Honors Senna’s 1988 Championship
McLaren Special Operations (MSO) has completed a unique McLaren P1 GTR bespoke project to mark the 30th anniversary of Ayrton Senna’s maiden Formula 1 World Championship in 1988. The McLaren P1 GTR is liveried in the iconic colors of then-sponsor Marlboro – synonymous with McLaren for over 20 years – as they appeared on the MP4/4 that propelled him to the first of three F1 titles.
The car was commissioned by a McLaren collector who was inspired by Ayrton Senna from a young age and wanted to create a tribute that echoed the Brazilian’s trademark perfectionism. Working in close collaboration with the MSO team over the past three years the owner oversaw every detail of the project, resulting in a car worthy of Senna himself.
The core colors are the famous McLaren Rocket Red and Anniversary White that echo those of the Marlboro brand. Detailing includes the Senna Brand Trademark on the front splitter as well as in front of the air intake and each door, with the ‘Senna’ script and ‘Driven to Perfection’ slogan on the doors and intake. The doors also show the Brazilian flag and the bar code used in lieu of Marlboro script when required by advertising restrictions. More than 800 hours was spent on painting and other external points include Senna’s 1988 race number ‘12’ on the nose, bespoke 30th anniversary laurels behind the side windows and discreet branding acknowledging a range of McLaren technical partners past and present.

McLaren Announces “Track-focused” P1 GTR is Coming
[Press release] Twenty years on from victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans by the now legendary McLaren F1 GTR, McLaren Automotive will resurrect the iconic name from its history for the track-only edition of the award-winning McLaren P1. The limited-run model will go into production when the 375th and final example of the road car has been completed, and in homage to its race-winning ancestor, the most powerful McLaren to date will be named the McLaren P1 GTR.
With no need to comply with road legislation, the McLaren P1 GTR will be designed and developed as the best drivers’ car in the world on track. This will see even greater levels of performance, grip, aerodynamics and downforce than the road car. It will also feature technologies and a powertrain more extreme with an intended power output of 1,000PS (986 bhp), race-proven slick tyres, a widened track and more aggressive and distinctive styling designed to offer optimised performance around a lap.
The decision to produce a track-only variant is in response to demand to McLaren P1 owners. The McLaren P1 GTR programme will be priced at £1.98m ($3.35m USD), and will include a tailored programme created for each customer to build driver capability. It will include exclusive consultations with the McLaren driver fitness team and Design Director Frank Stephenson, privileged access to one of the McLaren racing simulators, and participation in a minimum of six dedicated international drive events to be held at some of the world’s most iconic Formula 1 circuits. Exact production numbers are still to be determined, but will be strictly limited.
